National Bloc: The expansion of armed militias is dragging the country towards a new “Cairo Agreement”

The National Bloc released the following statement:

On December 4, the Hamas movement called on the "Palestinian people in Lebanon" to join the "Vanguards of Al-Aqsa Flood" to "resist the occupation by all available and legitimate means", amidst the official Lebanese silence we have become accustomed to.

We, at the National Bloc, emphasize our support for the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to their state and self-determination, but it must never come at the expense of the Lebanese state and our right as Lebanese to also determine our own destiny.

Therefore, we warn against the expansion of armed militias and their use of the Lebanese territory in dangerous ventures that the Lebanese have not yet forgotten. These were one of the main causes of the outbreak of the civil war that both devastated Lebanon, and undermined the Palestinian cause in the process.

We also hold Hezbollah accountable for this unrest, as the party has taken upon itself to act as the guardian over the security of the Lebanese people, especially those in the South. Hezbollah’s deafening silence provides political and security cover for Hamas' move, which may expose Lebanon and its South region to a war far more dangerous and fiercer than the one occurring today, which Hezbollah claims it wants to avoid.

We call on all political forces and official authorities to reject being dragged once again into a new "Cairo Agreement" and to address the matter before it's too late. We all know how these new equations start and how they end.
